Synchronizing the last stages of pregnancy with winter may cause depression

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who are in the final stages of pregnancy during the short, dark days of winter may have an increased risk of postpartum depression

This is a type of depression that usually begins in fall and winter and disappears in the spring and summer

 

The authors of the study said their findings should prompt doctors to encourage pregnant women at risk of depression to increase their exposure to daylight and increase vitamin D levels

 

Postpartum depression

 

The study was led by Deepika Goyal, a professor of nursing at the University of San Jose, Calif., Where she and her research team led a review of about 300 mothers for the first time who participated in random controlled sleep trials before and after pregnancy. Researchers looked at the amount of daylight Obtained by pregnant women during the last trimester of pregnancy and other risk factors for postpartum depression, such as medical history, age, socioeconomic status and quality of sleep

The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Behavioral Medicine that focuses on postpartum health, also found that women who matched the last three months of pregnancy with longer hours of the day had a 26 percent risk of depression.
